| Review: Before you watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button I wondered how they react to a story about a man who is born old and gets younger as he grows up. Of all the stories I've come across, this is by far the most mysterious and intriguing. If I had to pick someone to bring this story to the screen, I do not think David Fincher will be my first choice. How I was wrong. This movie is by far one of the best if not the best since 2008. Finchers direction is flawless! The film is from start to finish, not slowing down. There are moments of joy and ecstasy, followed by sadness and understanding. Brad Pitt as Benjamin, a boy born an old man who has to live his life backwards. His childhood friend, Daisy, played by Cate Blanchett. The story is told from the perspective of Benjamin, along with some special moments of Daisy. The voices doing anything wrong. Pitt and Cate Blanchett comes from the strong performance of Taraji P. Henson as Queenie, Benjamin surrogate mother, the only person in the world who seem to understand and really love it right from the start. Other cameos on the way to bring a wide range of characters, including Tilda Swinton, one of Benjamin's early love interests. The film extends from the end of World War II until the arrival of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Transitions old-age and decade to decade are effective. Fincher does a tremendous job in maintaining a constant flow of action and dialogue. Not a dull moment in the film. The cinematography is great and pairs well with Finchers style emphasize certain colors to enhance the mood or moment. There really nothing wrong with this movie. Even with the implementation of about 160 minutes, the time just flies, just as it does for Benjamin, but we move forward. It is light and meaningful film not want to ask for. |
