| Review: High school misfit Carrie (Sissy Spacek) telekinetic escapes her anger at her tormentors. It was a big hit in 1976 and scared me silly. It does not scare me now (excluding the final scene), but I still think it's a good solid horror nicely handled by Brian De Palma. It moves fast, has some beautiful footage (everything is soft-focus shot with a muted color) and have almost uniformally good performance. The only bad one is John Travolta way out of his depth playing with hat. Amy Irving (the student who befriends Carrie), William Katt (very 70s Afro), Nancy Allen (play real bitch), Betty Buckley (so young and full of energy) and PJ Soles ( silly but bearable) are all perfect. But Spacek is fantastic adopted by Piper Laurie is very scary and strange as deranged, religious mother. Also the image (by today's standards) very reluctant to blood and gore. And the last scene will make you jump (also take cars in the background under it - they are moving backwards!) Only complaints - De Palma really hate some of the high school kids - you Fo, laughing like hes working out some personal issues here. And we really need slow-mo shower scene in the beginning? That aside - it's a great movie. See the letter in the frame. |
